Important news for Southern Swim Schools – Please read to end

23rd February 2017

Dear Parents,

It is with great regret I write to you today with the news Portsmouth City Council and Springfield School Governing body have taken the decision to shut Springfield School pool.

We were informed by the Head teacher, Miss Spivey, and with a letter from Portsmouth City Council telling us the plan is to concrete the pool over and turn it into a gym with the purpose of freeing up other space in the school to increase intake by 65 pupils.

Paul, Julia and I are deeply saddened by this news and shocked that despite its somewhat dated exterior they would decide to the cut the life of a functioning pool and lose such a valuable asset to both the school and the wider community, especially when the city does not have many school pools left and there is no other school pool as large as Springfield in the north of the city.

I have estimated, using our records, we have taught around 9000 children to swim at Springfield pool over the decades, something the Goring family, Paul, Julia and I are extremely proud of. The loss of Springfield to us is not only a loss to our business but a very personal one and we have decided to send this letter to the whole swim school today for a number of reasons;

Firstly we are aware that many of the Springfield swimmers have moved to other locations across the swim school and would like everyone to be informed of news from the school and secondly a petition has been started to try and save the pool. Please could all parents across the swim school consider signing it, it will also be available on our Facebook page where you can share it with friends.

The link to the petition is here – Springfield Petition
Save Springfield Pool Facebook page – Save Springfield

For parents who have been waiting for news of the pool reopening, I am sorry it is not what we were hoping for, we do not want to lose any of you as swimmers but we have limited spaces across the rest of the swim school, please can you contact us with either a request for us to find you a space for your child/ren or so we can offer you a refund where one is due.

If you would like a refund please email us with your bank account and sort code details. Please note we do not have full staff in the office until Monday 28th February and therefore we will begin to reply and process emails FROM this date, which may take us some time due to the volume of emails we receive.

I would like to just finish by saying thank you to everyone for your continued support of the swim school and understanding over the last 6 months. Springfield Swim Club was the founding part of our swim school in 1971 and under the guidance of my grandparents set out the principles and legacy by which the rest of our swim school has been founded. We look forward to a bright future with the Southern Swim Schools without forgetting where we came from and look forward to teaching many more children and adults to swim for decades to come.

Many Thanks Lynn Goring-Crook

Petersfield Parking 21/1/17

19th January 2017

Dear Parents,

Please be aware of a couple of changes I need to make you aware of to our lessons on Saturday at Churchers College.

Firstly there is the annual entrance exam at the school on Saturday and no one will be able use the usual car park. Instead please use the car park at Herne School (Love Lane, GU314BP) and walk across the grounds to the pool, please see map below. Parking will return to usual next week.

Secondly we are pleased to announce we have increased our pool time to 1300 on a Saturday, this will allow us to offer a greater range of times and take in more swimmers from our waiting list.  It also allows you as existing customers the opportunity to move to either of the two new times of 12 or 12.30pm should you wish to do so. However In order to do this we have had to change the timings and groups that our teachers work. As a result you may find that from this week onward your child has a new teacher – this will be for the remainder of this term.  All notes on the children and what badges they are working toward have been passed on and the children will remain in the same group but with a new teacher. We would like to apologise that this did not happen from the start of the term but logistically it was not possible.

If any of you would like to see our availability later in the day please let us know.

Many thanks

Paul -Southern Swim Schools

Top up lessons £12 for a special 4 week course with our trainee teachers

10th May 2016

Additional Top up lessons still available for only £12!

Top Up Swimming Lessons at Springfield Swim Club just £12 for a special 4 week course.

Come along to Springfield for lessons for extra lessons over a 4 week period with our trainee swimming teachers. 30 minute lessons £12 for the 4 weeks and 1 hour lessons for improvers ONLY £18!!

During May Paul and Lynn, who are STA Aquatic Tutors, will be training a set of new swimming teachers to qualify and work with the swim school. As part of their training the teachers need to teach small groups over a 4 week period (one of the weeks being their exam).

We are looking for children who wish to have some top up lessons on:
Saturday 7th May
Saturday 14th May
Saturday 21st May
Saturday 28th May
for the teachers to teach live lessons to.

The sessions times will be 30 minute slots between 2pm and 4pm. They will be exactly the same as your ‘normal’ lessons. They are open to our children aged 3 years plus and all lessons will be widths. Non Swimmers, beginners and improvers are all welcome. More advanced children who are Angelfish and Shark level are welcome but must understand these will be width lessons concentrating on technique and water skills.

The teachers will be well prepared for delivering the lessons  having previously studied their theory and in the pool without children, they will also be under close supervision of Paul and Lynn.

The lessons are just £12 for the 4 weeks. Children are required to sign up for the whole fours weeks to take part.

This is a great chance for children to do some extra lessons at the fraction of the price and help to prepare them in time for badges after half term. Any children who attend the four weeks will be reassessed at the end by their usual teacher and moved up groups if necessary.

Please contact us to book on with your children’s names.

We expect these spaces to book up quickly so they will be offered on a first come, first served basis.

Kind Regards
Paul Linkins and Lynn Goring-Crook

Sponsored Swim at Mary Rose pool in support of The Elizabeth Foundation. Parent information –

29th February 2016

Our sponsored swim starts next week Monday 7th March at all pools across Southern Swim Schools

As part of our 45th year celebrating Springfield Swim Club we are very pleased to announce we will be holding a sponsored swim across the whole swim school in support of locally based charity – The Elizabeth Foundation.

The Elizabeth Foundation is a charity supporting infants and preschool children with hearing loss and their families. They do this by providing education services, help, support and encouragement and  help deaf babies and children learn to listen and talk. It is a charity very close to our hearts as over the years we have had many deaf children whom have swum with us and also benefited from their services.

In this, our 45th year at Springfield Swim Club, we wanted to do something special and different to celebrate and therefore every child across the swim school (all 1200 of them!) will be taking part in a sponsored swim event from Monday 7th March to Saturday 12th March 2016.
We hope with your help to raise a fantastic amount for the charity and also for all our swimmers to challenge themselves to swim further than they have before! Furthermore a local business in the area has pledged to match whatever is raised by our swimmers meaning we could all make a significant contribution to The Elizabeth Foundation and its work.

The sponsored swim will take no more than 10 minutes of lessons during the week and at Mary Rose pool the sponsored swim will work as follows:

All group 1 swimmers are challenged to swim 1-2 widths with or without swimming aids.
All group 2 swimmers are challenged to swim 1-2 widths without swimming aids.
All lengths swimmers are challenged to swim as many lengths as they can in 10 minutes.
Children can change strokes as they wish during the swim.

There are three ways to take part in the sponsored swim:

1. The quickest and easiest way to collect sponsorship is to set up your own Just Giving page where the money goes directly to the charity. Please follow this link:

2. Use the below sponsorship form to collect sponsors -please bring this on the day of your swim with money in an envelope and hand into one of our helpers with a charity bucket. We can also collect money in the weeks after but please have all money in by 21st March.

Master Sponsor Form 2016

3. If you would prefer not to collect sponsorship money then we ask you make a contribution to one of our charity buckets on the day. ALL children will be taking part regardless and will receive a certificate and medal from The Elizabeth Foundation at their expense. Please do give what you can.

We hope the children will relish in the challenge of this special event and look forward to hearing everyone cheer on the children at the pool.

If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to speak to one of us or contact us.
